What is the periodic table? The periodic table is a system that lists all known elements and places them in a framework that helps scientists understand their relationship to each other. New elements are still discovered via particle accelerator experiments. OVERVIEW: the elements of the periodic table © ShutterstockWhich groups and periods are there in the periodic table? The periodic table is a systematic ordering of the elements by atomic number. The system is organised into groups: the main groups 1-18 correspond to the vertical columns of the system. The horizontal rows are referred to as "periods". The elements of the same group have comparable chemical properties. All elements in main group 18 are noble gases, while those in main group 17 are all halogens. The periods in the system are the horizontal groupings of the elements. Elements are placed in period with other elements that have the same number of electron shells around their nucleus.Who invented the periodic table? The periodic table was developed by Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleev in 1869. At the time, only 63 elements were known. Mendeleev discovered that every seventh element had properties in common, when he listed them by weight. On the back of an envelope, he arranged the elements in 18 groups - the vertical columns - according to similarities in chemical behaviour. Horizontally, the elements were arranged in seven periods, which indicate how many electron shells the substances have around them. The Russian chemist left gaps in his table for elements that had not yet been discovered. As new elements were discovered that fit into the gaps in Mendeleev's table, the periodic table became widely recognised. Dmitry Mendeleev invented the periodic table in 1869. In 1955, element No. 101 was named mendelevium in his honour. © Wikimedia CommonsHowever, it is only a matter of time, before the periodic table is expanded further. Chemists throughout the world are competing to be the first to expand the table with element No. 119.What do the numbers in the periodic table mean? It was not until 1913, when Niels Bohr proposed his atomic theory, that a theoretical explanation of the behaviour of elements was given.Bohr theorised that an atom is made up of a nucleus with protons and sometimes neutrons. The number of protons and neutrons determines the weight. The elements have increasing atomic numbers. The atomic number reflects the number of protons in the nucleus. The lightestMemorize the Periodic Table: The Fast
