The fact that 343 is one of the primary offenders in this scenario and literally the test case for why we shouldn't pre-order is why this Halo 5 beta paired with an absurd way-ahead-of-time pre-order is in such bad taste. If there is one game fans should absolutely avoid pre-ordering like the plague, it's Halo 5, given how much hinges on the fact that multiplayer will work, and 343 has literally just shown just how badly they can mishandle that component.It doesn't matter if Halo 5 is a return to form and the beta is a sweet taste of an eventual amazing evolution of the series. Halo 5 could debut with a 99 on Metacritic, but the most important facet is that it works at launch, something we can't know until after launch. 343 is at fault for their Halo: MCC screw ups, but if fans immediately turn around and pre-order their game nine to eleven months ahead of launch, no one has any right to complain if they ship an non-working product again. Fool me once, and all that.And while the second a game is officially announced, it's available for pre-order at a place like GameStop, this is a different situation because 343 is already detailing specific pre-order packages including a $90 season pass one with DLC described simply as "new digital content to enhance Spartan combat," whatever the hell that means, and a $250 package with a statue that no one has even seen yet.I know many Halo superfans believe they are going to buy the game regardless, so why wait to pre-order? But that's destructive thinking, and only serves to reward a developer that severely messed up this year, resulting in a greater likelihood of the same thing happens again. If fans show they will continue to buy a potentially broken product, sight unseen, what message does that send to publishers and developers? That quality control is less important than pre-order bonuses and collectible statues.I think Halo 5 looks great. I will likely buy it. However, in this day and age there is not a reason in the world I should purchase or pre-order that game even a day ahead of launch (much less eleven months), given the current state of the industry, and 343's recent history especially.
